St Martin's, Byker is a friendly church serving the community of Byker through worship, prayer and community outreach. We offer a modern worship environment to respond to the diverse needs and tastes of our congregation. All are welcome to worship with us!
Worship at St Martin’s strives to be joyful, uplifting and accessible to everyone. On most Sundays we have a Communion Service, or The Eucharist. We sing - using a mixture of traditional hymns and contemporary praise worship music - greet one another, listen to Scripture and a Sermon, and spend time in prayer. We conclude by receiving bread and wine, remembering Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, something that Christians have done in worship since the very early church. On most Sundays there is a Sunday School for children during the first part of the service - here children take part in activities and story reading, all relating to the teachings of the bible for that particular Sunday.
The Church is first and foremost a worshipping community. We are most ourselves when we are worshipping God together. We bring all our lives to Church with us: things we are very thankful for, our happiness, our sadness, our confusion, even our sin. Nothing needs to be held back in our life in Jesus Christ. He understands us and rejoices and grieves with us, and forgives us so we can continue in life, renewed. We hope worship to be: joyful, prayerful, meaningful and strengthening. We also have a time of short prayer Monday - Thursday mornings at 8:45 am, a great way to begin the day!
St Martin's Centre is a fabulous facility, whereby St Martin's Church can open the doors of their new building to the wider community, offering space available for a broad range of community based events. The centre is also home to a Barnado's Nursery, offering high quality nursery care for children aged 0 to 5 years. The nursery is open all year round from 7:30am to 6:00pm. The space inside the centre is divided into 3 main areas, alongside the kitchen, lounge and dedicated chapel area. These multi-purpose areas are ideal for group activities and meetings. By the use of partitioning, flexible spacing arrangements can easily be made. The centre also has an upstairs room with wooden floor available for hire, accessible by a lift.
